The largest higher secondary school amongst the diocesan institutions, St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Mapusa held its investiture ceremony of its four social wings namely, the Student’s Council, the Youth Red Cross (Y.R.C), the Science Association, and the National Service Scheme (N.S.S) on the 9th of July 2019 in the presence of the entire Student Body. Rev. Fr. Apollo Cardozo Director of Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Porvorim was the Chief Guest for the same. The Chief Guest, escorted by Principal Dr. Elvis Gonsalves and Vice – Principals, Ms. Magret Dias and Mr. Brian Duarte were given a guard of honour by two N.C.C cadets. The programme began with a solemn prayer service. The Chief Guest was then escorted by the Principal and Vice – Principals to the dais and they were joined by the convenors of the four social wings. Ms. Karen Soares introduced the Chief Guest while Ms. Lena Gonsalves welcomed him with a potted plant. The traditional lamp was then lit by all the dignitaries.
In his address, Principal Dr. Elvis Gonsalves spoke about the qualities of a leader: of being loyal, visionary courageous, leading by example and knowing and showing the way and encouraged the students of being good leaders. The convenors of the four committees read their reports for the academic year 2018 – 2019. The Principal, Dr. Elvis Gonsalves then administered the oath of office to the Student Council Executive Body ie. the General Secretary, the Cultural Secretary, the Sports Secretary, the Discipline Monitor and the Cleanliness Monitor and all their assistants. The pledge was then taken by the class representatives of all 30 classes. The Vice – Principal of the General Stream Ms. Magret Dias administered the oath of office to the executive members of the Y.R.C unit and the Science Association. The members of each association took their respective pledge followed by the singing of their respective hymns / anthems. The Vice – Principal of the Vocational Stream, Mr. Brian Duarte, administered the oath of office to the executive body of the N.S.S unit. The student volunteers took the pledge and sang the NSS song. The Chief Guest decorated every executive body member with their respective badge of duty. The General Secretary Ms. Aloma Almeida addressed the students and expressed her gratitude in being elected as General Secretary. In his address, the Chief Guest Rev. Fr. Apollo Cardozo Director congratulated and commended the students for their initiative in taking responsibility as leaders and he also advised them on the role they had to play. The vote of thanks was followed by the singing of the School Anthem. The function ended at 2pm.
